Robert E. Rodes Jr., Paul J. Schierl/Fort Howard Corporation Professor of Legal Ethics emeritus, died Tuesday (Nov.25). He was 87.

A New York City native, Rodes studied at Middlebury University and was graduated from Brown University in 1947 ahead of serving in the U.S. Navy for two many years. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1952 and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar the following yr. He worked in the legal department of Liberty Mutual Insurance coverage Firm from 1952 to 1954, ahead of joining the law faculty at Rutgers University for two years throughout which he spent his summers serving as clerk in the New Jersey Superior Court. In 1956, he joined the Notre Dame faculty, exactly where he has remained ever since, educating and writing in the areas of administrative law, civil method, ethics, jurisprudence, law and theology, legal history and welfare legislation. He was a member of the Catholic Commission on Intellectual and Cultural Affairs.

“The numerous of us who loved him, loved him for his character as much as for his extensive and exceptional scholarship,” explained Nell Jessup Newton, dean of the Notre Dame Law School. “Bob was an crucial element of Notre Dame Law College for much more than 50 many years. Though he retired earlier this year, he remained as intellectually vigorous and engaged as ever, most recently doing work on final touches of a book manuscript.”

Dean Newton joined several of Rodes’ other Notre Dame colleagues who affectionately remembered him in the Law School’s announcement of his death.

A wake will be held at Kaniewski Funeral Home (345 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend) from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Monday (Dec.1) followed by a funeral Mass at three:30 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
