New deputy provost to tackle faculty diversity

Anthropology Division chair Richard Bribiescas will serve as the first deputy provost for faculty improvement and diversity at the University.

In an announcement published this week, Provost Benjamin Polak stated Bribiescas would fill this newly formed position, which will be accountable for helping recruit and encourage faculty, delivering tips for tenure and appointment processes and leading the development of a University-wide faculty diversity initiative. Though Bribiescas will not formally phase into the part until January 2015, the announcement stated he would instantly begin advising the provost on matters concerning faculty advancement and diversity. Though faculty and college students interviewed applauded Bribiescas’ appointment, some cautioned that the responsibilities of the function will be demanding.

“The Yale leadership and I share a vision that a University can not really fulfill their likely for excellence with out diversity and equity,” Bribiescas said in an e mail. “My major challenge will be to proceed and increase on these efforts, build on our successes, discover from our problems and move forward to insure that we draw from a varied pool of scholars to continue our history of excellence.”

Bribiescas additional that although there were many faculty certified to serve in this place, he was honored to be chosen and is prepared to get on the responsibilities of the role. He mentioned his major objectives will be to market and help faculty excellence, diversity and gender equity.

The place of deputy provost for faculty development and diversity was created following the February 2014 recommendation issued by the Yale Diversity Summit Going to Committee, a group of educators, physicians and researchers tasked with advising the Yale administration.

The report urged the administration to produce a deputy provost post whose principal accountability is to oversee faculty diversity. The report even more stated that this deputy provost should be experienced in “the region of diversity” and have sources to facilitate recruitment across the University.

Faculty and college students interviewed said they supported the creation of this new role and that Bribiescas was competent to serve as its inaugural leader.

“I consider the appointment of a deputy provost for faculty improvement and diversity signals the higher importance Yale areas on these troubles,” professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry Karla Neugebauer said. “The total local community is looking forward to the leadership and creativity of Dr. Bribiescas.”

Bribiescas has a powerful track record of marketing all factors of excellence, like diversity, in recruiting and mentoring faculty in his department, Polak mentioned in an e-mail.

Political science professor Frances Rosenbluth, who served as deputy provost for social sciences and for faculty improvement and diversity, explained Bribiescas has proved himself as a leader as chair of the Anthropology Division. She mentioned his familiarity with the sciences is especially useful due to the fact the attrition price of girls in lab intensive fields is a main concern.
